Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort Invites You to “Mālama Kaua‘i”
Poipu Beach, Kaua‘i (June 10, 2008) – The oldest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, Kaua‘i is a pristine paradise that Hawai‘i residents and visitors from around the world clamor to visit seeking a travel experience that renews and enriches the mind, body and spirit. Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort provides a perfect opportunity to mālama, or take care of, this beautiful island, its precious natural resources and endangered wildlife with a new “Mālama Kaua‘i” green getaway package. The package, rate code SKEARTH, is available now until December 20, 2008 with rates starting at $229 a night plus tax, subject to availability. For more information or to make reservations, please call (866) 716-8140 or visit www.sheraton-kauai.com.
Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort’s “Mālama Kaua‘i” package includes a National Tropical Botanical Gardens logo bag, a book about the history of nearby Koloa Town and a welcome packet detailing opportunities to volunteer at several local non-profit organizations around the resort. Meet local Kaua‘i residents during regular weekend walks exploring the Garden Island with the Sierra Club Kauai (sierraclub.com/hi). Help keep the island’s white sandy beaches pristine by participating in beach clean-ups or marine debris removal from reefs with SaveKauai (savekauai.org). Contribute to the preservation and knowledge of tropical plants and ecosystems by participating on a “Vacation and Volunteer” basis with the nearby National Tropical Botanicals Garden (ntbg.org/donate/volunteer.php). Docents from the National Tropical Botanicals Garden also come to the Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort each Monday at 1:00 p.m. in the News Library to share information about their organization and the native plants found on Kaua‘i.
Other eco-environmental learning opportunities at the resort include a weekly presentation about the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal each Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in the News Library. One of the most endangered species on the planet, approximately 1,300 Hawaiian monk seals inhabit the Hawaiian archipelago with about 25 of these animals claiming the waters and beaches of Kauai as home. In an effort to foster awareness, the Sheraton Kauai Resort partnered with Tim Robinson of the Kauai Monk Seal Watch Program (KMSWP) organization in January 2006 to establish an ongoing educational program about the Hawaiian Monk Seal. The 45-minute presentation is complimentary and is open to the public. Seals are frequently seen in the waters off Sheraton Kauai Resort, and regularly “haul out” to rest in the Poipu Beach area. Since 2005, two Hawaiian monk seals were born on the sand just a short walk from the property. Guests will also have an opportunity to volunteer with the Kaua‘i Monk Seal Watch Program and federal and state government agencies if a monk seal is beached or has given birth in the area.
